Audition: January 24, 2021. Ms. Baker has cleverly incorporated some of the worst offenders into her script, neatly tucking in both character exposition and a couple of interesting plot points. Jamess vulnerability makes him prey to the sultry charms of Theresa, the failed New York actress whos here in the middle of nowhere to heal her own emotional wounds, and winds up seducing both men (and the teenaged Lauren) with her comfort in her body and her apparently open, if facile, vulnerability. Its maybe not a real feel-good message, but its one thats more honest than most, at least. A husband gives a monologue as his wife. One of the students, James (Tad Paulsen) is married to teacher (Nina Swanson), the revelation of which sets the tone for what is to be a play that is funny on the surface but extremely uncomfortable underneath. It was voted one of the top ten plays of 2009 by the New York Times, Time Out and the New Yorker. Holy balls I loved this play so much. Ir was directed by Sam Gold; the set and cosrume design were by David Zinn; the lighting design was by Mark Barton; the sound design was by Leah Gelpe; and the production stage manag- er was Alaina Taylor. The diffident Schultz, who feels that as a recent divorcee, he is a failure, while the assertive Theresa, who is always stretching her limber body, also broke up with her boyfriend recently. Still, for Marty, the self-exploration and pseudo-psychologizing that are her stock in trade provide their own reward. Birney plays Schultzs mercurial mood swings convincingly; even his sudden, menacing aggression seems justified when his rage boils up out of nowhere in the midst of his objective exercise with Theresa. Eventually, I realized that the fun of the play is the fact that its confined to this dull, windowless little space., To watch these connections form, break and reform in a space as small as a black box theater, Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window), Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window), Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window), Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window), Hard-fought CMS, P-P mens soccer game ends in double OT draw, Business casual season: A look into recruiting at CMC consulting groups, Cancel the climate crisis: Steven Koonin delivers Ath Talk challenging common climate change concerns, New CMC group to improve social life announced after controversial resolution and committee termination. Lauren knows that her parents arent happy; knows that Marty and Jamess marriage is headed for its end; sees through Theresas seductions while shes also attracted to them; and is the only character in the play who expresses well-founded doubt that Martys ministrations are really going to make them better actors.
